Fairfax County homes may use public water or a private well. Fairfax Water notes that some customers receive Washington Aqueduct water. Check your bill to find the provider and water quality report for your address.
For a private well, Fairfax County’s Health Department recommends sampling the water every year. Tell us about the well and any filters so we can discuss which of the offered panels fits your question.
For a home on Fairfax Water, its 2026 water quality report covers utility testing completed in 2025. A sample from your own tap checks the substances in the panel you choose.

Tell us your concern. We’ll help you choose a panel, a group of tests, from the four options below.
Check for the bacteria in this panel, whether your concern involves drinking water or a private well.
What it measures: Total coliform · E. coli · Hydrogen sulfide bacteria
A clear glass doesn’t tell you whether these substances are present. This panel checks for all three.
What it measures: Nitrate · Nitrite · Lead
Check acidity and dissolved material as part of looking into a taste or buildup concern.
What it measures: pH · Conductivity · Total dissolved solids · Salinity
Measure cloudiness from particles in the sample. Tiny air bubbles can also make water look cloudy.
What it measures: Turbidity, a measure of water clarity
Taste, smell and appearance alone don’t identify a cause. Each panel checks only what is listed; we’ll help you choose before you book.
Your results come from an independent laboratory. They can help you decide what to discuss with your water provider, lender or a treatment professional.
