Elkridge grew up around its landing on the Patapsco. Howard County's own history describes Elkridge Landing as the largest colonial seaport north of Annapolis, sited where the river's Great Falls ended navigation upstream. Houses set into the hillside above Elkridge Landing can have a walkout lower level on one side and a buried foundation wall on the other. Describe which side of the house is affected and whether the grade behind the house directs water toward or away from the wall.
