What turbidity measures

Turbidity is a measure of water clarity. The test measures how particles in the sample scatter light. It records a characteristic of the water rather than identifying every particle or its source.

01

Water clarity

A measured result for cloudiness in the collected sample.

02

Suspended particles

Particles scatter light and can affect the turbidity measurement, even when individual particles are hard to see.

03

A focused result

Use the result alongside your water-source information and any other tests requested for the property.

Cloudy-looking water can also contain tiny air bubbles. Appearance alone does not identify the cause. Turbidity does not replace bacteria or chemical testing and is separate from total dissolved solids.

A test for your next question

Start with what you need to learn. We confirm the tests, sample locations and report requirements before the visit.

  • Water that looks cloudy or contains visible particles.
  • A change in clarity after well or plumbing work.
  • A buyer or lender who has specifically requested a turbidity result.

Your testing questions

Is turbidity the same as total dissolved solids?

No. Turbidity concerns clarity and light scattered by particles. Total dissolved solids concerns dissolved material and is part of the separate water quality panel.

Does a clear result rule out bacteria or lead?

No. Turbidity is a focused measurement of clarity. Bacteria, lead, nitrate and nitrite require their own tests.

Can air bubbles make water look cloudy?

Yes. Tiny air bubbles can change the appearance of water. Tell us whether it clears after standing; the appearance alone does not identify the cause.

Is turbidity included in the FHA/VA loan kit?

Yes. Our FHA/VA loan water kit includes turbidity along with bacteria, lead, nitrate, nitrite and iron. Send your lender’s instructions so we can check the complete request.
